Dear Band Students and Families,

Welcome to the Legacy High School Lightning Band Program, the 2026-2027 school year, and one of the most prestigious band programs in the state. We are looking forward to another exciting year! This handbook has been designed as a reference to inform you of the policies and procedures of the band program. The policies within this handbook have been developed in order to run a smooth and efficient program. It encompasses everything from marching band, concert band, and jazz band, to the winter programs. Organization is very important, and the expectations are high for everyone involved with this program. Please refer to the following pages in this handbook to answer any questions you may have concerning the band program. If you still have questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. 

We will speak often of expectations because we have very high goals for each and every individual within this band program. This program helps students develop a wide variety of musical skills and life skills. Our primary focus for the band program will be the success of each individual student. We believe that band should be an experience rather than an activity, and that each student’s experience should be one that remains with them for the rest of their lives. We want each student to have the opportunity to experience music to the fullest extent, and we want to provide them opportunities to grow as individuals. In our program, students will gain knowledge of working in a collaborative environment that fosters skills applicable to all of their individual goals. We also want this experience to be fun and rewarding! Each of these attributes is fostered when everyone does their part and meets or exceeds their expectations. 

The policies set forth in this handbook are important in establishing Legacy High School Bands as one of the most prestigious organizations in the state of Colorado. “Every action has a reaction” and that reaction can be good, or it can be bad. All actions from band members should merit good reactions. We want students, parents, and teachers from other schools to see our students as role models in our activity. Always think of how you are representing the band, the school, the city and county of Broomfield, the state, the nation, and more importantly yourself! 

This program cannot run without the cooperation of the parents, students, staff, and administration. It is up to all of us to work together in order to succeed. The work will be difficult, but the rewards far outweigh the discomfort. Consistency, persistence, and the commitment to excellence must be embraced at all times. We are looking forward to getting to know each and every student and parent. We are thrilled and excited about what this year holds for the Legacy Lightning bands!

The Legacy High School Band Program was formed when the school opened its doors in the year 2000. The Lightning Bands have a long tradition of excellence in all aspects of our program offerings. 

Legacy High School Lightning Marching Band — The marching band stands out as one of the most prominent ensembles in our program, with an impressive track record. Having won the Colorado Bandmasters Association 5A State Championship eleven times (in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, & 2021), our band has set a high standard. Remarkably, we hold the distinction of being the only school in Colorado to have made state finals every year since our inception. Furthermore, our band has received prestigious invitations to perform at various parades, including the 2018 & 2025 Dublin, Ireland St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the 2015 Tournament of Roses Parade, the 2011 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the 2010 London, England New Year’s Day Parade.

Legacy High School Concert Bands — The concert band program serves as the heart of our band program. The Wind Ensemble is the premier concert band ensemble, renowned for consistently earning ratings of Superior and Superior with Distinction at both regional and state festivals. The wind ensemble has received several prestigious performance invitations, including the 2017 Music For All National Concert Band Festival, and has been honored as a CMEA (Colorado Music Educators Association) Honor Ensemble five times (in 2009, 2013, 2016, 2019, & 2026). 

Legacy High School Jazz Band — The Jazz Band meets during the school day and participation is determined through an audition process. The Legacy Jazz Band has been a featured performer at the Mile High Jazz Festival (in 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026), the UNC Jazz Festival (2026) and has been featured at the following venues: Nissi’s (2019), Muse (2022), and Dazzle (2024 & 2025). The Jazz Band frequently collaborates with professional musicians and jazz artists for each of their performances. 

Legacy High School Winter Guard — The winter guard program is an indoor Color Guard performance group that competes during the winter months each year. This ensemble competes in events hosted by both the Rocky Mountain Color Guard Association (RMCGA) and the Winter Guard International (WGI) organizations. In 2019, they earned the title of Rocky Mountain Color Guard Association State Champions and in 2009 they earned a Silver Medal at the Winter Guard International World Championships. 

Legacy High School Winter Percussion — The winter percussion program is an indoor marching percussion ensemble that travels and performs in competitions during the winter months each year. This ensemble competes in the Rocky Mountain Percussion Association and they have earned eight state championship titles (in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, & 2026). In 2026 the winter percussion team placed 16th in the nation at WGI World Championships in Dayton, OH. The Percussion Ensemble was also featured at the 2017 Music for All National Festival.

Membership in any of the Legacy High School bands is a privilege. It is required that you have been in band and played your instrument for at least 2 years before auditioning, although exceptions to this requirement are made at the discretion of the director.  Dr. Ebert will audition those wishing to be in the Legacy High School Bands and will make the final decision on membership. Freshmen do not need to audition to get into band. Simply sign up for Concert Band as long as you have had prior band experience in middle school band.

It is important to have consistency within the band program. YOU CAN ENROLL IN A BAND CLASS EVERY YEAR THROUGHOUT YOUR HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE AND STILL FULFILL ALL OF YOUR GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS.  You must decide for yourself that you will commit to finding a way to make it work. To do this it would be beneficial for you to place music on your schedule first and then find a way to work in everything else. 

Dr. Ebert will help you with any scheduling conflicts and will work with all parties involved to reach a solution.

MARCHING BAND REQUIREMENT — Marching Band is co-curricular and part of each band class. Every member of the Legacy High School Band Program is REQUIRED to also participate in the marching band. The only exceptions to this requirement are if a student participates in a fall school sport (not club/community), or participates in a regularly meeting sport or activity that is not offered in the Adams 12 Five Star District. If this non-district activity/sport does not meet more than once a week, then the student must participate in marching band or be removed from the band program. This exemption is at the discretion of the band director and will require proof of participation by the coach of the team or activity that the student participates in. If the student participates in a school sport in the fall, they will be exempt from marching band but will be given assignments that will replace the grades of the marching band performances. If students are trying out for fall sports they need to still participate in marching band practice until they make the team. They will be alternates during this time. If they don’t make the fall sports team then they will need to participate in marching band, and are then eligible for a spot in the show should one open up. Any student who will be participating in either a Legacy fall sport or a non-district-offered sport or activity and wishes to be exempt from participation in the marching band will need to complete and return the “Fall Sport Waiver Form.” 

PEP BAND REQUIREMENT — Pep band is REQUIRED for every member of the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, Symphonic Band and Concert Band. Students will be assigned to perform at basketball games and other designated events by the director. Rehearsals will be after school or before events as needed. 

The Legacy High School Band Program has developed several means of relaying important information to students and parents/guardians. Please take note of each of the following lines of communication and stay in the loop.

CutTime — CutTime is an essential management tool for our band program. Parents will receive weekly updates through CutTime and can use it to pay fees and track student ledger accounts. Simple Raise, a sister website to CutTime, will also be used to purchase spirit wear and uniform supplies, as well assist with fundraising efforts throughout the year. 

BAND APP — The Band App is a dedicated communication platform designed exclusively for students and staff in our band program. We will use it to share rehearsal schedules, convey important information during trips and on show days. Students should speak with their Section Leaders in order to be added to the “Legacy” Band App. 

SCHOOLOGY/INFINITE CAMPUS — Schoology is a Learning Management System provided by the school district. For our band program, we will use Schoology to post important announcements, share sheet music, share resources, and assign and track assignments. Infinite Campus is the district’s student information system (SIS), and is another point of contact between the directors and band students and their families.

FACEBOOK — Be sure to follow our Facebook page to stay updated on the latest band program news, events, and achievements. Engage with our social media by liking, commenting, and sharing our posts.

The Band Program at Legacy High School is very active, especially during the fall. The importance of the rehearsal and performance schedule cannot be overstated. Our calendar serves as a road map for the entire year, providing you with all of the information to plan and prepare. PLEASE, take time to look through the calendar and “Subscribe” to the online (Legacy Bands Google Calendar) by clicking on the (+GoogleCalendar) button in the bottom right side of the web page . Once you subscribe, all events and activities will automatically update to your phone, tablet, or computer. 

The online calendar is always the most up-to-date and accurate source of schedule information. If a change is made, we will indicate that with “CHANGE” preceding the event on the calendar. 

WIND ENSEMBLE — The Wind Ensemble is an advanced course and will involve the students who are extremely proficient on their instruments. Auditions are held for chair placement and membership. The course requires serious dedication and practice. Rehearsals are held during school with sectionals, rehearsals, and clinics being scheduled regularly outside of the school day. Attendance at extra sectionals, rehearsals, and clinics is mandatory. The Wind Ensemble also performs at a number of concerts and competitions throughout the school year. Attendance for concerts and competitions is also mandatory. All Wind Ensemble members are required to audition for at least one honor group (All State, CU Honor Band, CSU Honor Band, etc.) for which they are eligible.

SYMPHONIC WINDS — The Symphonic Winds  is an intermediate to advanced course and will involve students who are highly proficient on their instruments. Auditions are held for chair placement and membership. The course requires serious dedication and practice. Rehearsals are held during school with sectionals, rehearsals, and clinics being scheduled regularly outside of the school day. Attendance at extra sectionals, rehearsals, and clinics is MANDATORY. Symphonic Winds also performs at a number of concerts and competitions throughout the school year. Attendance for concerts and competitions is also mandatory.

SYMPHONIC BAND — The Symphonic Band is an intermediate course and will involve students who are proficient on their instruments. Auditions are held for chair placement and membership. The course requires dedication and practice. Rehearsals are held during school with sectionals, rehearsals, and clinics being scheduled outside of the school day. Attendance at extra sectionals, rehearsals, and clinics is mandatory. The Symphonic Band also performs at several concerts throughout the school year. Attendance for concerts is also mandatory.

CONCERT BAND — The Concert Band is a beginning course. Auditions are held for chair placement, but not for enrollment/membership. Any student who does not wish to take an audition for the upper-level advanced bands listed above is automatically enrolled in Concert Band. Rehearsals are held during school with extra sectionals, rehearsals, and clinics being scheduled from time to time outside of the school day. Attendance at extra sectionals, rehearsals, and clinics is mandatory. The Concert Band also performs at concerts throughout the school year. Attendance for concerts is also mandatory.

JAZZ BAND — Jazz Band membership is determined by audition. In order to participate in Jazz Band, you do not need to be registered for another band class. Rehearsals are held during school with extra sectionals, rehearsals, and clinics being scheduled from time to time outside of the school day. Attendance at extra sectionals, rehearsals, and clinics is mandatory. The Jazz Band also performs at concerts throughout the school year. Attendance for concerts is also mandatory.

COLOR GUARD CLASS — Color Guard is a scheduled class during the school day. Participation in this class is REQUIRED of all color guard members in the Marching Band as well as the Winter Guard. Students will be graded and evaluated on their technique and choreography progress throughout the school year. 

*GRADES — Grades in class are based on daily participation, readiness to learn, assignments, and performances. Please see each specific class syllabus for the detailed grading policy. 

The Marching Band is perhaps the most visible aspect of the Legacy High School Band Program and it is certainly one of the most successful aspects of the band program. All students who are members of the band program will participate in the fall marching band show and all parades and pep band performances. 

2026 MARCHING BAND SHOW

MARCHING BAND SPECIFIC INFORMATION 

• FOOD, WATER, & REST — It is imperative that you are rested, well nourished, and hydrated before every rehearsal. Marching Band is an extremely physically demanding activity and you should prepare for each rehearsal in the same way that an athlete would prepare for practice. You should eat healthy foods (fruits, vegetables, and high protein foods) and you should stay away from unhealthy foods (fast food, high in saturated fats, high sugar, especially soda). You should always stay hydrated and drink plenty of water before, during, and after rehearsals. Hydrating, in addition to healthy sleep habits and diet, should be undertaken well in advance of the marching season, camps,  and individual practices. Get the rest that your body requires. Everyone is different and has different sleep needs, but uninterrupted deep sleep is critical for physical and mental health and for focus during practices and performances. Try not to have your phone where you sleep, and consider a noise machine. Exercising and showering before bed can help students’ sleep cycles.
• CLOTHING —  Clothes that are distracting should not be worn. The school dress code is always in effect. Everyone must wear a shirt at all times, there are no exceptions. Low-top tennis shoes should be worn for all rehearsals, do not wear sandals to any rehearsal. Clothing should be appropriate for athletic activity, no jeans or baggy clothing. Students should prepare for all weather possibilities. In the summer, outdoor temperatures may reach 100°F and in the fall, temperatures have dropped below freezing. Students should come prepared for rain, snow, or wind. *Please note, that in the event of inclement weather that poses a risk or hazard to student safety, outdoor rehearsals will be moved indoors.
• MATERIALS TO BRING TO THE FIELD — ALWAYS bring your instrument and instrument specific accessories, music, drill, pencil/Sharpie, sidewalk chalk, painters tape, pouch, and any other necessary supplies. ALWAYS bring YOUR OWN water bottle (DO NOT EVER SHARE A WATER BOTTLE), the larger the better. Please refer to the Marching Band Rehearsal Materials Checklist for detailed information.

Come prepared for all rehearsals!

• PHYSICAL FITNESS — Marching Band is a physical activity and all members must participate in all physical conditioning activities at EVERY PRACTICE. Students will participate in a stretch and physical conditioning block at the start of each rehearsal and will run at every rehearsal.
  
  *If your student is unable to participate in a physical activity during any point of the marching band season, it is expected that you consult with your doctor. Please provide a doctor’s note for documentation.
• *Students may be exempt from running block for the season for chronic medical conditions or for a period of the season for an injury. Please provide a copy of a note from your doctor detailing the exemption request and the period of time the student will not be able to participate in the physical activity.
  • PLEASE NOTE — If a student is unable to continue their full participation, their drill spot may be reassigned to another student.
•  STUDENT EXPECTATIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • BEFORE REHEARSALS — Students are expected to arrive at rehearsals early. Students must be prepared to begin rehearsal at the posted time. Students are expected to arrive early to complete their “crew jobs.”  AFTER REHEARSALS — Students are expected to stay at least fifteen (15) minutes after announcements to put away equipment and assigned “crew jobs.”
  • CREW JOBS — Crew Jobs will be assigned to each section to assist in the preparing the marching band field for rehearsal and to store equipment 

• PREPARATION OF MUSIC — Students will be required during the marching band season to memorize music. Students will be assessed on their memorization and performance proficiency. Students are REQUIRED to PASS all of their music in order to perform at football games and competitions.

• MARCHING BAND ALTERNATES / FIELD PERFORMERS — Due to the difficulty of learning to perform a competitive marching band show, students will audition for a “drill spot” to demonstrate their marching and playing proficiency. Students who are determined to not be ready to fully participate in the competitive show will be assigned as “alternates.” Students may be assigned as alternates for any of the following reasons:

• Not attending summer band camps or missing the mandatory July/August Band Camp. 
• Inability to maintain a high level of marching proficiency at the time of auditions. 
• Inability to learn music and play and march at the same time at the time of auditions. 
• The student does not yet possess the maturity (such as rehearsal etiquette or attitude) to discipline themselves to maintain the schedule and guidelines detailed in this handbook.

• PHILOSOPHY OF ALTERNATES IN THE LEGACY MARCHING BAND PROGRAM – In a marching ensemble, we combine rigorous musical expectations with demanding physical, spatial, and timing requirements. Full membership on the field necessitates not only musical proficiency but consistent marching technique, spatial awareness, stamina, uniform discipline, and safety consciousness. The alternate system exists to support students who are enthusiastic and committed, but who are not yet fully ready — whether musically, physically, or in rehearsal discipline — to sustain a performance role every game. Alternates are full members of the ensemble: they attend every rehearsal, learn drill and music, and serve in support roles (sideline, parades, stands, etc.). Over time, alternates are eligible to move into full roles through challenge procedures or as vacancies open. This system serves multiple purposes:
  • Training and growth — alternates gain the rehearsal experience, muscle memory, and mental stamina needed to perform safely and reliably under pressure.
  • Risk mitigation — marching on the field involves speed, direction changes, coordination, and real physical strain; we must ensure that every marcher is stable in technique so that no one (or no group) is endangered by an unexpected stumble, collision, or misstep.
  • Fairness and flexibility — alternates help us manage roster sizes, allow for competition between similarly capable students, and give students a clear path to improvement rather than harsh exclusion.
  • Transparency and accountability — having written policies, challenge opportunities, and consistent expectations ensures that all students and parents understand how alternates are chosen, when they might step in, and what is required to become a full marcher.

All students are expected to adhere to the following expectations while a member of the Legacy Band Program:

• Punctuality: Arrive early to every rehearsal and performance, remembering that “to be on time is to be late!”
• Preparedness: Bring all necessary materials to each rehearsal and performance, including breathing tubes.
• Practice: Commit to practicing outside of class or rehearsal on a daily basis.
• Professionalism: Conduct rehearsals in a quiet and professional manner, refraining from talking on the field or in the band room without permission. Raise your hand and wait to be recognized before speaking.
• Respect for Authority: Show respect to the Director, staff members, chaperones, and parent volunteers. Disrespectful behavior towards adults or staff members will not be tolerated and may result in removal from the group.
• Focus: Maintain focus and attention during all rehearsals and performances.
• Behavior: Keep hands and feet to yourself, avoiding horseplay or disruptive behavior.
• Language: Refrain from using foul or offensive language during any band-related event, practice, or travel.
• Chewing Gum: Do not chew gum during rehearsals or performances. Do not chew gum in the Band Room.
• Food and Drink: No food or drinks other than water are allowed in the Band Room.
• Transportation: Respect and obey transportation department rules while riding buses.
• Respect for Equipment: Respect the property of others and refrain from touching equipment that does not belong to you.
• Timeliness: Complete assignments by the assigned date.
• Cleanliness: Put equipment and materials in their assigned space after rehearsal or performance, maintaining a clean band room environment.
• Seating: Sit correctly in chairs and use stands only for music. Avoid leaning on stands or putting stress on them.
• Instrument Use: Refrain from playing instruments other than your own, and ensure proper training before assisting in moving instruments.
• Fundraising: All students are encouraged to participate in fundraising efforts.
• Band Room Access: Only band members are allowed in the band room; non-band students and friends are not permitted.
• Public Displays of Affection (PDA): Avoid PDA in the band room or during band activities.
• Cell Phones: Cell phones should not be used during rehearsals or performances unless for band-related purposes. Phones must be in airplane mode during class and keep out of sight.
• Substance Use: Drugs, alcohol, and tobacco are strictly prohibited.
• Prohibited Items: Weapons, explosives, fireworks, etc., are not permitted.
• Social Media: Inappropriate posting or messaging on social media sites is prohibited.
• Video Posting: Students (and parents) should refrain from posting videos online due to copyright violations.
• Dress Code: Adhere to the school dress code at all band events, rehearsals, and performances.
• Communication: Students, it is your job to communicate with parents regarding pick-up times and locations after performances, contests, and practices.

A WORD ABOUT RESPECT —  Members of the Legacy High School Band Program are responsible for showing respect to whoever is leading them. This includes section leaders, parents, guest artists, substitutes, and music directors. This is a courtesy among musicians. Whoever is on the podium must be given the undivided attention of everyone in the ensemble.

COMMON SENSE — The most important rule of all, use common sense and always act in a manner reflecting the pride of the Legacy High School Band. Listen to directors, staff, boosters, drum majors, section leaders, and always follow directions. 

CONDUCT CLAUSE — Any member of the Legacy High School Band Program who displays conduct unbecoming of a band member may be removed from performances, travel opportunities, leadership positions, or the entire band program depending on the severity of the offense. This includes, but is not limited to, unexcused absences, failing grades, suspensions, discipline issues, attendance issues, improper conduct, or not following rules and policies set forth in this handbook or rules and policies set forth by Legacy High School or Adams 12 Five Star Schools.

EXCUSED ABSENCES

• Excused absences must be arranged prior to their occurrence. Each absence will be evaluated on an individual basis, and should fall under one of the following categories: 
  • Family Emergencies
  • Sickness/Medical Emergencies (must be documented with a note from a medical professional)
  • Approved School Related Events (this does not include needing to make up exams or complete homework)
• If a student has excessive excused absences then you may not be permitted to perform. Students for whom this pertains to will be given the opportunity to make up the grade for the performance. 

ABSENCE REQUESTS 

• Any time a student will be absent from any outside of school day rehearsal or performance, PARENTS/GUARDIANS, must notify Dr. Ebert either two (2) days before a rehearsal or two (2) weeks before a performance (students need to confirm with Dr. Ebert that he has received the absence request). 
• Students are not allowed to excuse themselves for any reason. ABSENCE REQUESTS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY A PARENT OR GUARDIAN. 
• Absence requests MUST be submitted via the ABSENCE REQUEST FORM 

DAY-OF ABSENCES OR EMERGENCIES

• We understand that emergencies cannot be avoided. If an emergency does occur, please contact the Band Office at (720) 972-6817 and leave a voice message and send Dr. Ebert a follow-up email when possible. 

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES

• This should not be a problem within the Legacy Band Program. If this ever becomes an issue, Dr. Ebert will meet with parents and/or Legacy Administration to find a solution which may include removal from the ensemble, loss of leadership position, or removal from the band program. 
• Any unexcused absences from rehearsals will result in the student not participating in the next performance, demotion of drill spot,  and a possible loss of letter or removal from the ensemble. 
• If a student receives an unexcused absence from any class on the day of a performance, they will not be allowed to perform on that day’s performance. 
• Examples of unexcused absences from band: work, birthday parties, concerts, movies, homework, disciplinary action from home.

*A NOTE ON VACATIONS — Please do not plan family vacations during the marching season (late July/beginning of August through the end of October — see band calendar for exact dates). If you will be a member of a competitive winter group (Winter Percussion or Winter Guard), please do not plan family vacations during these competitive seasons (January through April). Vacations will be considered an Unexcused Absence and the student will not be permitted to perform at the next performance if they miss any rehearsals or performances due to a vacation. They may forfeit their letter for having an unexcused absence. 

*A NOTE ON SUMMER REHEARSALS — Summer rehearsals (May/June 3-Day Camp, July 3-Day Camp, and individual sectionals) are mandatory if you are in town. If you will not be in town due to a vacation or other event, you must complete the Absence Request Form and notify Dr. Ebert. Summer rehearsals are extremely important in order to evaluate student growth and prepare students for auditions to earn a drill spot in the competitive marching show. 

Students must meet academic standards in order to gain and retain their eligibility for competition. Students must not be failing two or more classes at the time of a competition. 

Students will have their academic grades verified on a weekly basis in the following manner: 

• Thursday: Teachers post student grades in Infinite Campus.
• Friday: Eligibility information is collated and Directors are notified. 
• Ineligible students may not participate in performances or contests until grades have been redeemed to a passing grade. STUDENTS WILL STILL BE EXPECTED TO ATTEND REHEARSALS/PRACTICES. 

When the band travels, remember that we are representing the band, the school, the district, the county, the state, and our country. Our image and how we present ourselves will be noticed wherever we go. 

The following guidelines are expected of every band member when traveling: 

• Band Members are required to use school provided transportation, or other transportation provided by the band, to all scheduled events. Under no circumstances may a band member use any other transportation without prior approval from the Band Director. 
• Students must follow all rules of the transportation provider for each trip. 
• Students must respect all facilities we visit and use.
• Students must respect all property of others on buses, planes, or hotel rooms. 
• Students may not play instruments or use drum sticks while on buses, planes, or any inappropriate areas. 
• Always be considerate of those around you. No screaming or loud behavior will be permitted. 
• When traveling, students will need to wear their Band Polo shirts with either khaki pants or khaki shorts. 

**IMPORTANT** — In-state performances requiring travel are mandatory. Out-of-state travel participation is strongly encouraged but not required. If a student (and their family) chooses not to travel out-of-state with the band, they are still required to participate fully in all band/marching band practices and performances in the state. The only exception is if a student has been granted an exemption. If a student does not travel with the marching band out of the state, they will be assigned an alternate/field performer role for all in-state practices and performances.

**IMPORTANT** — In the event that a student is suspended or faces discipline issues prior to a scheduled band trip, it is understood that the student will be ineligible to travel with the band. Any deposits or payments made by the student or their parent/guardian for the trip shall be forfeited, unless the student/parent/guardian had previously purchased “Cancel for Any Reason” insurance. This policy is in place to uphold the standards of conduct expected of band members and to ensure the integrity and reputation of the band program and Legacy High School. 

**IMPORTANT** — In order for members and families to begin making payments toward trip fees, their Fundraising Goal (FRG) MUST be met entirely for that school year. 

**IMPORTANT** — Parents who wish to chaperone an overnight trip MUST have chaperones AT LEAST THREE (3) times prior to chaperoning the overnight trip. All chaperones who accompany us on overnight trips must be approved by the band director, the trip Lead Chaperone, and must be cleared to travel with the band through Legacy High School and Adams 12 Five Star Schools. 

Pride in appearance should be maintained at all times. The uniform is not just a piece of clothing; it is a symbol of pride, unity, and professionalism that represents our band on and off the field. The following guidelines are expected of every band member while in uniform. 

APPEARANCE — Anything that draws undue attention or distracts from the cleanliness of the uniform or performance will need to be covered or altered while in uniform. Band Members are expected to adhere to the following expectations:

• Band Members, while in uniform, should remain in full uniform at all times. The only exception is when permission is given to use “half” uniform dress.
• No hats or sunglasses may be worn while you are dressed in any uniform. The only exception is headwear that is worn for religious purposes or sunglasses that are prescription transition lenses. 
• No earrings are allowed while  in half or full uniform. If earrings are not removable, they must be covered up with flesh colored band-aids. 
• No jewelry may be work or visible while in half or full uniform. This includes, but is not limited to: necklaces, bracelets, earrings, watches, rings, nose rings, etc. 
• No nail polish other than clear is allowed while in half or full uniform. 
• No lipstick may be worn while in half or full uniform. (Color Guard excluded if the lipstick is part of your costume for performance). 
• Tattoos or body art should not be visible while in half or full uniform. All tattoos must be covered with flesh colored band-aids and all body art must be removed while in half or full uniform. 
• Dyed hair, other than natural colors, is not allowed while in half or full uniform. Hair must be one natural color, multiple colored hair is not allowed. 
• Facial hair must be properly maintained and clean cut. 
• Long hair that reaches the top of the neckline or longer must be put up (marching band only). 
• Shirts must be tucked in at all times in half or full uniform.
  
  *Any students who are missing any part of their uniform or are not dressed appropriately may not be permitted to perform and may receive additional disciplinary consequences. 

BEHAVIOR — We will ALWAYS represent ourselves and our band with pride and professionalism. To ensure this, it is crucial that all Band Members adhere to the following behavior expectations, especially when in uniform:

• Swearing or abusive language is not acceptable for any reason. 
• Consumption of food or drinks (besides water) is not allowed while in full uniform. 
  • Food may be permitted while in half uniform at times when permission is given. 
• Running in uniform is never allowed. Students should always walk professionally. 
• Horse play, fooling around, or inappropriate behavior is not allowed at any time.
  
  *Any students who misrepresent the Legacy Band Program while in uniform may not be permitted to perform and may receive additional disciplinary consequences. 

JAZZ BAND UNIFORMS — Jazz Band members will need to have black pants, black socks, black dress shoes, and a black shirt (exact brand and type to be determined by the Director). Students will need to purchase these items on their own.

MARCHING BAND UNIFORMS — Band members will be issued a marching band uniform for the duration of the marching band season. Uniforms are stored at Legacy High School when not in use. Students are responsible for maintaining their uniform and periodic cleaning. Students are responsible for supplying their own black socks. 

CONCERT BAND UNIFORMS — Band members will be issued a concert band uniform (tuxedo or gown) for the duration of the marching band season. Uniforms are stored at Legacy High School when not in use. Students are responsible for maintaining their uniform and periodic cleaning. Students are responsible for supplying their own black dress shoes and black socks. 

When students enter High School Band, their beginner instruments are sufficient to use as Marching Band Instruments (outside instruments); however, students are highly encouraged to step up to a better instrument, especially for use indoors. Please refrain from purchasing instruments and accessories from retail stores (e.g., Walmart, etc.) and from online sources without the approval of either the Legacy directors or private lesson instructors. At the VERY LEAST, students should obtain better mouthpieces. Students limit their success if they use beginner equipment at the high school level. If you have any questions regarding what equipment to purchase, please reach out to the band directors. They will be happy to help. 

Here is a concise list of recommended equipment for your student (this is not an exhaustive list):

• Flute: Open-hole flutes are recommended for concert season. Closed-hole for marching band.
• Clarinet: Vandoren 5RV Lyre, M30, M13, BD5; Reach out to instructors for more options
• Bass Clarinet: Vandoren B45, Selmer C-Star or C85 Mouthpiece; Reach out to instructors for more options
• Saxophone: Alto: Selmer C-Star Mouthpiece, Jazz – Meyer 7; Tenor: Selmer C-Star Mouthpiece, Jazz – Metal Otto Link 7*; Baritone:  Classical – Selmer S90 190 Mouthpiece; Reach out to instructors for more options
• Trumpet: Bach 3C or 5C or equivalent; Reach out to instructors for more options
• French Horn: Laskey 75G; Reach out to instructors for more options
• Trombone/Baritone: Bach 6 1/2 AL or Bach 5G or equivalent; Reach out to instructors for more options
• Tuba: Bach 18; Reach out to instructors for more options
• Percussionists: All percussionists must pay the district rental fee ($100/see below) for use of school percussion instruments. Sticks and mallets will be available at discounted rates for the year. A $50 stick fee will be assessed in CutTime, and will count towards these discounted stick fees. Stick Fees may be higher than the $50 mentioned above if new drum heads are needed, or if equipment is worn beyond normal wear-and-tear. 

All Band Members are entrusted with the care and maintenance of school-owned property including: instruments, music, uniforms, props, folders, music stands, chairs, etc. Loss or damage (beyond normal wear and tear) will require the student to reimburse the school district for repair or replacement of the item. 

INSTRUMENT RENTAL FEES — Students that use school instruments or equipment will be billed a rental fee of $100.00 for the entire year or $50.00 for the semester through Infinite Campus. (Free and reduced lunch will be automatically redacted to $50.00 for the year). Students and parents/guardians will need to complete a rental agreement each school year prior to taking possession of the instrument. School instruments that are taken home should be reported to your homeowner’s insurance policy in the event of theft or severe damage. 

MISTREATMENT OR DAMAGE — Anyone found to have intentionally mistreated, damaged, or destroyed any part of the facility, instruments, or other property will be referred to the Legacy High School administration.

The annual expenses required to operate the band program currently sits between $200,000 and $215,000. The money raised by both individual students and overall program fundraising is absolutely necessary to maintain the level of success that Legacy High School students deserve. It is not possible to operate this band program solely with the funds that our district provides. Therefore, it is necessary that each student and family participate in fundraising in some way. There will be multiple opportunities throughout the year to participate in fundraisers and contribute to your fundraising goal. 

To give you an idea of how this breaks down, it costs on average $1,380 per student to participate in band in any given year, not including out-of-state trips. The fundraising goal (FRG) pays for approximately half of the $1,380 per student, while general band fundraisers make up the rest. It is critical that all FRGs be paid so that the band can continue to offer a high quality experience for all band students.

FUNDRAISING GOAL (FRG) — The Fundraising Goal or FRG is a set amount of money that we expect students and families to contribute annually. The FRG is determined each year by the Boosters when the annual budget is reviewed and approved. Families are able to contribute to their FRG directly or participate in fundraising campaigns. 

Some fundraisers will go towards the General Band Fund, while others can contribute to your FRG. Until a student’s FRG is met, individual student contributions or funds earned through fundraising will be credited toward the student’s FRG. After the FRG is met, all remaining funds will be credited to the Student Ledger as surplus funds. Students may use surplus funds for required band-related expenses.

Acceptable uses of surplus funds in the Student Ledger:

• Uniform Accessories: Marching Shoes, Student Polo Shirts, Color Guard track suit, etc.
• Winter Guard or Winter Percussion Fees
• Marching Band Bundle
• Stick Fee
• Other required Band Events (CMEA, Honor Band accommodations, etc.)

REQUESTS FOR USE OF FUNDS — All requests for using surplus funds must be emailed to the Finance Team.

Surplus funds in a student’s CutTime account will rollover to the following school year as long as the student is enrolled in band or color guard. Surplus funds can be transferred to siblings, but Finance must be notified of this request before the start of the new school year. All other surplus funds belonging to graduated Seniors or those who have left the program will be donated to the Trip Scholarship Fund.

If your student qualifies for Free and Reduced Benefits, their FRG is 50% the total FRG amount. Please reach out to Dr. Ebert to let him know that you have qualified for this program. The marching band bundle is not exempted for Free and Reduced benefits holders because the bundle is a fixed cost.

*During trip years, the student’s Fundraising Goal (FRG) MUST be met ENTIRELY before any contributions to the trip fees can be made. In order for a student to travel with the band, the FRG must be met. For the 26-27 school year, FRG will not be assigned in CutTime until 9/12/26 and should be paid in monthly installments until 3/31/27. Paying your FRG monthly is a new option this year, as collecting FRGs early in the school year helps the band meet expenses.

*Students who rent an instrument will be assessed a fee through Infinite Campus. Please see the section, “School Owned Equipment” for details. FRGs are not meant to be applied to this fee.

*An increase in volunteer time/efforts does not mean you are entitled to money from the program.

*Travel scholarships are available if funding allows for them. Scholarships should be requested prior to their need, and should not be seen as a rescue fund after the fact.

HOW IS FRG INCOME USED? 

The FRG helps fund all aspects of the program, from instructors for marching band to jazz band, winter percussion, winter guard, and concert band. Also included in the expenses that FRGs cover are music licensing, show design, uniforms, marching band props and equipment, instrument purchase and repair, transporting everything to competitions and football games, band events, and much more!

MARCHING BAND BUNDLE — The band bundle includes meals during marching season, show shirt, and gloves. Meals will be provided on Saturdays, before football games, and during contests. We will not be able to have students pay for these items individually; therefore, it is required that families purchase the bundle if they are a member of the marching band. This is generally due around mid-August.

POSSIBLE ADDITIONAL EXPENSES — As with any organization, there are always additional expenses that will be associated with participation. Some possible expenses may include, but are not limited to:

The Legacy Band Boosters are one of the most important aspects of the Legacy High School Band Program. Without the Band Boosters, the band program would not be able to offer all of the musical and educational opportunities that we currently have available and the program would not be able to function properly and efficiently. The main objective of the Band Boosters is to provide support and promote the growth and development of the entire band program. The Band Boosters are a collaborative effort among the Band Directors, Band Staff, Band Members, and Member Parents/Guardians. Any and all dedication to the Band Boosters will not only benefit your child, but will benefit the entire band program. 

**IMPORTANT** — In order to volunteer as a Band Booster, you MUST have a Raptor Check completed with Legacy High School each year. This process involves completing volunteer paperwork and providing your government issued ID to the Legacy High School Main Office. Please complete the Volunteer Application and Agreement Paperwork prior to the All-Parent Meeting in August of each year. 

FUNDRAISING — Fundraisers are a constant and on-going effort throughout the entire year. Help is needed to disperse the information and any products. Help is always needed with every fundraiser. Please reach out to our Fundraising Board Member to see how you can help and participate. 

PIT CREW — The pit crew is responsible for transportation and care of all equipment during competitions and football games. This may include the transportation and unloading of instruments (percussion and large instruments) as well as props. Students will be available to assist in the unloading process, but the Parent Pit Crew will need to assist with getting equipment on and off the field for competitions and football games. *You will also get a very unique view to watch the marching band show from the field! 

CHAPERONE — Chaperones play a crucial role in accompanying the band to all football games, competitions, performances, and trips throughout the year. There are many opportunities to volunteer as a chaperone throughout the school year. *Please note, that if you wish to chaperone an overnight band trip, you MUST have chaperoned at least three times before the overnight trip. 

UNIFORMS — Assistance is needed during uniform fittings and for distribution for each performance. Volunteers help with fittings in the fall for marching band season and in the then for concert uniforms. 

MEAL SERVERS — Volunteers are needed to assist in serving meals to the band during lunch and dinner breaks. This includes meal preparation, service, and clean up. 

CARPENTRY AND/OR SEWING SKILLS — Assistance is needed in various tasks such as building props, altering uniforms, sewing flags, etc. 

EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE — Volunteers ensure that instrument carts are in good working order, bolts are secure, and assist with repairs and routine maintenance to the scaffolding or other equipment used by the band. 

VIDEOGRAPHER/PHOTOGRAPHER — Capture competitions and events throughout the year, take photos, and assist with the end-of-year photo or video montages. 

WEBSITE DESIGN — Parents with website design skills may assist in maintaining or designing the band website. 

BAND BOOSTER BOARD POSITIONS — The Band Booster Board , composed of parents and the directors, make decisions for the program. These leadership positions are necessary to the success of the band program. 

MARCHING FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS — The Legacy Marching Festival relies on volunteers for its success. Every family is encouraged to help in some capacity, whether as a Chairperson for specific tasks or assisting in other areas during the festival day.

Your involvement is essential to the continued success of the Legacy High School Bands and provides an excellent opportunity to support your students while doing something they love!

LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS — Students desiring to be a part of the Leadership Team within the band should first carefully consider the following: being a leader takes TIME (outside of regular practice times), and attendance at special leadership camps will be required throughout the summer. Students interested in any leadership position should consider if he/she has prepared adequately for such a role. Ask yourself these questions: have you proved your personal commitment to this organization by meeting all expectations as a member? Have you done some TANGIBLE things to prepare you for this leadership role (i.e.: All-State Band, solo/ensemble, etc.)? Are you ready to make the personal sacrifices this position may entail? If so, read on…

LEADERSHIP POSITIONS AND DESCRIPTIONS — The following leadership positions assist in either the leadership and/or teaching of the Legacy High School Bands and shall be appointed by the directors and staff, after appropriate auditions have been completed. Drum Majors, Color Guard Captains, and Section Leaders are chosen through competitive tryouts where specific information on how to prepare for tryouts is released 2-3 weeks before the tryout date. Appointment to these positions will be based on the staff’s evaluations and recommendations.

• DRUM MAJORS — The Drum Majors assist in the teaching and organization of the marching band with other duties as assigned.
• SECTION LEADERS AND HORN SERGEANTS — Several positions are appointed by the directors to assist the band in a variety of ways as outlined by the Director. Section Leaders will have more responsibility and are expected to be early to and stay late for all rehearsals/performances. Horn Sergeants are selected from the brass and woodwind sections, and assist the directors, staff, drum majors, and section leaders with their duties.
• CAPTAINS — The Guard and Percussion captains assist in the teaching and organization of their specific groups.

Students who earn a leadership position will continue their training throughout the entire year. They will follow a comprehensive curriculum and gain essential skills and experience in leadership.

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS — At the end of the year banquet, we will recognize the outstanding achievements of those students that have gone above and beyond the requirements and have proven themselves to be very successful band students. Students will receive plaques or certificates recognizing their award and some awards recognize students by having their name engraved on plaques in the band room to commemorate the honor. Some of these awards include:

LETTERING — A letter should be a source of pride to each student. It represents the tremendous time, effort, and dedication a student has invested in the Legacy High School Band program. It should reward the student for efforts that are not graded in the classroom. The key element in any lettering program is that a student must spend extra time and effort in order to earn a letter. A letter that is granted merely for participating in the class lessens the value and meaning of the letter to all who receive the award. To letter in Band, the following conditions must first be met:

1. Students must maintain at least a B average each semester in the ensemble for which they are enrolled.
2. Freshman, Sophomores, and Juniors must accumulate the necessary points as outlined on the lettering form they will fill out at the end of the year. 
   1. Point accumulation begins in June and are totaled at the end of the school year. Points do not accumulate into the next school year. 
   2. Please refer to the “Lettering Point Sheet” to track point accumulation. 
3. All students, regardless of receiving an automatic letter or not, must attend 3 Legacy High School Band, Choir, Orchestra, or Drama productions in which they are not performing (Programs with the students names printed on them must be turned in at the end of the year with the lettering form).
   1. STUDENTS MUST KEEP THE PROGRAMS FROM THE CONCERT THEY ATTEND FOR CREDIT TO TURN IN AT THE END OF THE YEAR. 
4. If a student misses a performance, they must submit their make-up assignment. If they do not turn it in, it will be considered an unexcused absence from a performance and they may not letter.
5. If a student is in Color Guard in the fall, they also MUST BE IN WINTER GUARD and complete the season in order to letter.

The following conditions will forfeit eligibility to letter:

1. Unexcused absence from any performance, contest, football game, etc.
2. Any severe infraction of school or band policies.
3. More than 2 unexcused absences from any mandatory or required rehearsals or sectionals.
4. Quitting Band, Color Guard, or Winter Guard at any point during the year/season.

The Legacy High School Band Staff are one of the most important contributors to the students’ success. It is impossible for the Band Directors to give each individual student attention and personal feedback when working in a large group. The staff are highly qualified music educators, musicians, and professionals. It is our privilege to have them work with our band students! 

Students involved in private lessons with specialists on their instrument will experience a dramatic rate of improvement. Private lessons offer personalized instruction and focused attention that will significantly enhance a student’s musical skill and proficiency. By investing in private lessons, students will have specialized feedback and guidance from experienced instructors. It is HIGHLY encouraged that all students take lessons from a private instructor on a consistent basis. 

All the teachers on the list below have been vetted by Dr. Ebert. Private teachers who teach at Legacy High School have gone through the same background checks as district employees and have completed “Person of Trust” Training through the Adams 12 Five Star School District.

ALL-STATE BAND AND HONOR BANDS —  Throughout the course of the school year, students will be offered the opportunity to audition for the Colorado All-State Band, CU Honor Band, CSU Honor Band, or Colorado All-State Jazz Band.  The student will have assistance through the director and/or private instructor in preparing for such auditions.  The student will have to sign up to audition.  Legacy Bands will pay for the entry fee.  If the student backs out of the contest after the entry fee has been sent in, the student will need to reimburse the fee to the band.  If students make any of the honor or all-state ensembles, they will be responsible for hotel fees and all other fees associated with the participation in the ensemble.  Also, students will need to be chaperoned by their parents or guardian for all Honor ensembles. Dr. Ebert will chaperone the students to All-State Band and All-State Jazz Band.  All members of the Wind Ensemble are REQUIRED to audition for at least 1 honor ensemble each year, and seniors in Wind Ensemble are REQUIRED to audition for All State Band.

LOCAL CONCERTS AND PERFORMANCES — From time to time, students will be given information on local concerts by college and professional groups.  Students are encouraged to expand their musical horizons by attending these events.  

SUMMER CAMPS —  Information is made available every year on several area band camps and leadership camps.  Most camps are open to all interested band members, regardless of experience level.  Some offer tuition-free attendance through auditions.  

COLLEGE PLACEMENT AND SCHOLARSHIPS —  Graduating seniors in band are offered assistance in college selection.  Financial help is offered through a variety of scholarship opportunities, both local and through a specific college.  Music scholarships are a great way to help offset the high cost of attending college! 

TRIPS — The band will travel out of the area often.  Trips must be paid for by the student.  There will be several fundraising opportunities each year to help students raise the money for trips.  Students may use money from their Student Ledger to help offset or pay for the trip.  Students or parents may also pay for the trips through cash or check.
